Acid Buildup in the Oil

An engine has been store for over a year. When the engine was run for a short period of time, it was suspected that a main or connection rod bearing was bad. During disassembly of the engine, it was notice that there were small spots of corrosion on the crankshaft journals.

 Diagnosis:
Used oil that sits in an unused engine may have a buildup of acids over a a period of time. The acids come from the combustion process and enter the oil pan because of blow-by past rings.
 Solution:
To prevent acids from developing in the oil, always change the use oil in an engine before the engine is store. Do this if the engine is to be store for more that three months at the time.
