Temperature Gauge Reads Too Hot

A car with 45,000 miles on it seems to be overheating. There is a "hot" light on the dashboard., and the temperature gauge reads to o high. On the highway at 55 mph, the light goes on and then off. Does this mean the engine is very hot? The engine doesn't seem to lose power, and coolant never has to be added.

 Solution:
The first and easiest component to replaced is the coolant temperature sensor. At times, these coolant sensors will operate incorrectly. Although  the sensor is reading too hot", the engine may be at the correct temperature. Replaced the coolant temperature sensor to eliminate the problem.
